Anchor low, negotiate up
Your first offer sets the negotiation floor. If they ask $5,000, open at $2,000-$2,500. They'll rarely accept, but you've anchored their expectations down. Negotiate to $3,000-$3,500 and both sides feel they won.
Use comps as cover
"Estibot shows $3,200. Afternic comparables are $2,800-$3,400." Data beats opinion. Pull NameBio actual sold prices for similar domains. Sellers negotiate down when they see actual market data, not your gut feel.
Package and bundle
Buying one domain at $3K might fail. Buying three at $2K each ($6K total) closes deals because bulk deals feel like "wins" to sellers. Bundle complementary domains (example.com + example.io) to justify lower per-unit pricing.
Know your walk-away price
Set your ceiling before you start negotiating. If $5K is your max and they hold at $6K, walk. Other deals exist. Overpaying on one acquisition destroys ROI across your whole portfolio. Patience pays.
Speed kills price
If you negotiate fast and close in 24-48 hours, you save 10-20%. Sellers who sense urgency hold firm. Take time, be patient, let them sweat that their domain might sit longer.
